Stacking the Days

I'm not a fitness guy. Haven't been since I finished playing football nearly 30 years ago. Sure, I'd go to the gym here and there, but nothing consistent. Nothing that stuck.

This year I decided to join the YMCA in Cobourg. In December, my son Harry was home and we went together pretty often. There's something about sharing that experience with him that made it feel less like a chore and more like time well spent. Companionship matters.

January rolled around and I've been holding myself accountable. Most days I make it to the gym. Last night I didn't sleep so great, so this morning I missed it. And here I am, being publicly accountable. Weird, maybe, but it works for me.

So instead of nothing, I set up the WaterRower and did an Apple Fitness+ workout. Rowing with Anja. I'm not great at it yet, but damn, that was hard. And then I "stacked" a core workout on top of it. That's apparently what it's called when you add workouts together. And then, because why not push past my comfort zone, I finished with a meditation. Not something I'm comfortable with. But I gave it a shot.

Here's the thing. By doing something every day, no matter what, you set a rhythm. It becomes almost like a soundtrack to your day. You gotta listen to great music or great audiobooks while you're doing this, right? The companionship ends up being with yourself. And that seems to work for me, for now.

If you're someone who's trying to stay healthy, get fit, hit some goal, or just deal with whatever life is throwing at you, I'm with ya. Let's do this.
